Environmental protection

Tatung Co. believes that the economic development should not create pollutions to the environment but try to forge a marriage between corporative development and environmental protection and make this as our operating strategy. In the past twenty years, the trends of environmental protection evolve from end-pipe treatment, industrial waste minimization, and clean production to the disclosure of environmental information to the public. On the way to achieve sustainable development, Tatung Co. continues to follow the latest environmental protection trend to encounter the new challenges. ODM Business Unit continues to take international environmental regulations into consideration, adopt the concepts of easy-dismantle toxic free and energy saving in product design. Brand Business Unit orients its R&D towards health, environmental protection and energy conservation to build a comfortable living environmental for our customers. Industrial Appliance Business Unit and Motor Business Unit continues to develop high energy efficient, low-noise and toxic free products for greener product image. Wire and Cable Business Unit makes an all-out effort to develop its products in the direction of being low-lead, cadmium free, low-smoke and halogen free as well as continues to develop a wide assortment of LAN and fiber-optic cables for the demand of broadband networks. Besides, Tatung Co. will work hard in solar energy industry, promote our energy managements system to the public, and implement the concepts of "Green Building" in the housing projects to mitigate the impacts brought by greenhouse effects, and eventually achieves our vision of “Clean global village”.

Tatung Co. started to implement “Pollution Prevention Pays, 3P” program in the factories and the subsidiaries which have manufacturing function since 1993 to help Tatung to develop environmentally sound operations. The elements of 3P program are listed as follows:
I. Promote Clean Production technology, fully utilize resources and materials and to reduce the wastes and the production costs. One aspect of this is to improve the existing manufacturing processes and management operations, with the objective of eliminating sources for pollution. Also improve upon raw materials, and improve upon the recycling/reuse, and exchange/reuse of waste materials. Another aspect of this is to develop and choose zero pollution or low pollution manufacturing processes to reduce the amount of wastes.

II. Develop green products to create additional values for products. The objective is to apply the concept of “Design for the Environment, DfE”, in the design phase to produce “recyclable, low pollution, toxic-free, resource saving, power saving, and durable” products to benefit the environment.

III. The Company conducts yearly on-site auditing and evaluation in each factory and subsidiary to benefit management in their review of environmental performances and draft of new policy and objectives.

Tatung Co. started to implement ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in its factories in 1996 to continually improve its environmental performances in order to enhance its competitiveness on the market and corporate image.

Greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted by human activities have already caused global warming and led to the threat on the sustainable development. Corporations actively to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions are not only to show a responsible image to the public but also able to reduce the operation costs from running the business. The interested parties and publics nowadays are expecting corporations to disclose their greenhouse gases emissions information, too. For the purpose of enhancing the ability to do greenhouse gas inventory in the factories and the subsidiaries, Tatung Co. runs two training courses in the company, ISO14064-1 GHG Management Class and ISO14064-1 Internal Verification Class from 2009 to generate well-trained employees through these classes and they are able to do the greenhouse gas inventory. All the factories have implemented ISO14064-1 since 2010 and started to carry out GHG emission inventory. At the same time, the factories will continue to reduce GHG emissions by any possible measures.

Tatung is tirelessly dedicated to the development of green products and many of them have been awarded with “Green Mark” and/or “Energy Label”. There have been 270 Tatung products certified with Green Mark by EPA since 1993. There also have been 160 Tatung products certified with Energy Label by MOEABOE. Tatung Co. will continue to design and produce more energy efficient and environmental friendly products to sustain our living planet.

In 1988, Tatung established the Pollution Prevention Educational Center, which promoted environmental protection education. Aside from the environmental protection training classes offered in the Study Center, Tatung Co. also carried out Factory and Education Collaborative Projects with Tatung University to give correct environmental knowledge, as well as train pollution prevention professionals. In September 1996, Tatung Occupational Hygiene Laboratory acquired the certification by Council of Labor Affairs, it granted the certification again in January 2009 by TAF for the analysis of organic substances, inorganic substances and dusts (CLA No. 0990025275). In August 2002 Tatung Co. established Tatung Environmental Research Center, which is recognized by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA No. 117), and conducts regular factory environmental analysis and reform work in the areas of drinking water, water quality, and water amount. In order to extend the service for our subsidiaries and external companies, Tatung Co. established the Sampling Facility and certified by Council of Labor Affairs in December, 2003 (CLA No. 0930061298). Tatung RoHS Laboratory was established in November, 2005 and certified with ISO/IEC17025:2005 by TAF (TAF No. L1697-101102). The laboratory is able to examine and analysis any hazardous substances existing in electrical and electronic materials, parts and products. The results are able to help factories, subsidiaries and external companies complying with the requirements from customers and EU regulations. The staffs are given related training and performance review regularly to ensure the services and test results are accurate and reliable.

Since 3P project was first introduced to al l factories and subsidiaries of Tatung Co. in 1993, the concepts of clean production and pollution prevention have been actively embodied in the operation of the daily process.
